Beginner at Astro Photography

I’m a complete beginner at astro photography (and vlogging, and video editing). So, I phoned up a friend who’s good at it and set out on an adventure.

This is a old post which never was published until now. All the outdoor events was shot on the 22nd of August, 2020. The studio segment was shot on the 23rd.

The Location

Gavin and I met up in Ösmo and headed to Knappelskär in the outdoor area, Lövhagen, south of Nynäshamn to try and catch the Milky Way. The weather was supposed to be perfect, but…

The Video Log

The forcasts said it’d be clear skies…

Gear

The two successful shots of the Milky Way where done using a Sony α7 ii with a Samyang MF 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC using a Commlite EF-NEX adapter. My tripod of choice was a Feisol CT-3301 with a Sirui K-10X ballhead.

The Milky Way timelapse was shot using a Canon EOS 700D with a Canon EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 STM kit lens mounted on a Manfrotto tripod.

The video was shot using GoPro Hero 7 Black and edited using DaVinci Resolve.

Conclusion

This was my first attempt at actually shooting the Milky Way, and it was my first attempt at vlogging the whole experience as well. Since then I’ve got an RGB LED panel (with the possibility of being red) so I can vlog in the dark without damaging my night vision too much. I’ve also got a Røde VideoMic Go which will be an improvement of the audio compared to the above video.
